Schedule

Fri | 1:00PM - 4:00PM | Introduction to Italic Calligraphy (Nikola Pang)

Presenter Nikola Pang

Duration: 3 hrs

Cost: $80 (includes materials)

Capacity: 15 participants

Day/Time: Friday, March 27th - 1pm-4pm

Join me in learning the beautiful, classical, forms of Italic script! Cancelleresca, or Chancery hand, came about from a marriage of humanist and Roman forms and really hit its stride during the period we know as the Italian Renaissance. These scripts were so popular in their multitude of variations that they quickly became adopted by both the church and became adopted throughout the old world as a standard. This widespread use lead the slanted, broad pen, script to such renown that, even today, we still call many small broad nibs "italic". Classically beautiful, flowing, very nearly ideal in readability and highly refined through the ages it's no wonder that Italic is still considered by a large number of calligraphers and typographers to be a "perfect script".

In this course we will focus on the history, forms, and execution of creating classic (and perhaps a few contemporary) Italic hands.

The course includes all materials and handouts. If you wish to bring your own tools feel free. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own ruler and mechanical pencil if possible. Hope to see you there!

Sat | 11:00AM – 12:30PM | The Analog Line: A Journey Through Pen & Ink, Vintage Flex, and Creative Practice (Scott Jones)

Presenter: Scott Jones

Day/Time: Saturday, March 28th - 11am-12:30pm

Duration: 90 minutes

Capacity: 20 participants

Cost: $60 - Materials needed are provided

Join illustrator and author Scott B. Jones for a lively, hands-on exploration of pen-and-ink drawing, vintage fountain pens, and the living history of the analog line. Blending storytelling, technique, and historical context, this session offers an engaging experience for pen collectors, creatives, writers, and anyone curious about expressive mark-making.

Drawing from decades of study and presentation, Scott explores the preservation of vintage writing instruments and the golden age of illustration, while reflecting on creativity, stress, and anxiety in an increasingly digital world. Participants will learn how early illustrators became some of the first “celebrity artists,” how the Ben Day process shaped mass media, and why vintage flex nibs create lines modern pens rarely replicate.

Through simple forms—circles, lines, and dots—Scott demonstrates the foundational elements of all drawing, while sharing practical insight gained from presenting at pen shows across the country. The session also focuses on building confidence, rhythm, and muscle memory, and on sustaining creative inspiration over time.

This creative, historical, and practical seminar is designed to inform and inspire.

The class fee includes a signed copy of Scott’s latest book, *Vintage Fountain Pen Therapy: Art and Absurdism From the Fountain Pen

I’ll be providing all materials for the session, including paper, ink, and a selection of vintage fountain pens from the 1920s and earlier. If attendees want to bring your own pens for note‑taking or have questions about your vintage pens, you are welcome to, but it’s completely optional. My handout and book will cover everything you need.

Sun | 9:00AM - 12:00PM | Introduction to Copperplate (Nikola Pang)

Presenter: Nikola Pang

Day/Time: Sunday, March 29th - 9AM-12PM

Duration: 3 hours

Capacity: 15 participants

Cost: $80 - includes all the tools (nibs, holders, papers, handouts)

Come learn the beautiful calligraphic style of copperplate script! Copperplate calligraphy, also known as roundhand, engrosser's, and engraver's script, is considered by most to be the mother of all pointed pen hands. It still stands as one of the most recognizable and highly demanded design elements in pointed pen calligraphic works. In this course we will go over a concise version of its history and learn to use dip pens in order to form the basic strokes of its construction. This course is geared towards beginners but those with more experience may attend it as a refresher course and I do my best to teach to the level of each individual in the second half of the course (plus it's always nice to have experienced attendees help). Attendees are welcome to bring their own supplies for use if they wish. I also encourage attendees to bring a pencil and ruler with them.
